Genesis Chapter 1 - God Our Creator

Key Verse: Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Genesis is a book of beginnings. It portrays the beginning of everything in the world: the world [v. 1-25], the people [v. 1:26-2:25], the sin in the world [v. 3:1-7], God's promise of salvation [v. 3:8-24], living as a family [v. 4:1-15]. civilization [v. 4:16-9:29], the nations and languages of the world [v. 10,11], and the Hebrew people [v. 12-50].

Genesis 1 stress that God is the Creator. He created everthing by the power of His Word. he formed the earth and filled it with plants and animals. He formed the seas and filled them with creatures. Then He made man in His own image, and gave him the authority to rule the earth [v. 26-27].

Animals become obedient to our commands, and they also serve as food for us. The earth also yields forth food. The seas, rivers and lakes give us water to drink. The sun warms us and gives life to the plants. Surely we must see God's goodness and love towards us in all these things. He created all these things to meet our needs, and for us to enjoy.

How should we respond to God our Creator? We can respond to Him in prayer, worship, song and psalm. [Psalm 9:1-2].

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for giving us "richly all things to enjoy" [Timothy 6:17]
